Time to break open the molds and clean these two up nicely for the show.

Mold Breaking and Cleaning
Friday, June 25th, 2010Creeptacular and Crookee Continue
Friday, June 25th, 2010This was the nerve wracking bit of the bronze casting process. Would the molds shatter, were they solid inside, would the air vents work, was it all a massive waste of time?
Entropy Posters – Part 2
Friday, June 25th, 2010Finally got these posters finished, apart from trimming and framing. I changed my mind about them half way through, initially they were going to be portrait with the crystal forms coming in from one side and a paragraph of text from Smithsons ‘The Crystal Land’.
The gray sky seemed to swallow up the heaps around us. Fractures and faults spilled fourth sediment, crushed conglomerates, eroded debris and sandstone. It was an arid region, bleached and dry. An infinity of surfaces spread in every direction.
Entropy Posters – Part 1
Sunday, June 13th, 2010Robert Smithson identifies entropy with the crystalline and I have taken this a very loose departure point to begin another project. I decided to make a set of posters with crystal like structures as a way of experimenting with a different process: printing and overprinting laser cut perspex on the letter press. The pieces are engraved so they will print solid with hairlines reversed out.
Article Submission
Sunday, June 13th, 2010Rationally, unused or neglected spaces are unwanted and should be redeveloped, cleaned up, reintegrated and smoothed out, but these are some of the most visually arresting spaces that we can experience. The juxtapositions of detritus and junk, overgrown patches of weeds slowly reclaiming their territory from cracked concrete and tarmac. Crumbling brickwork and car parts reflected in overlapping planes of broken glass. Blocked doorways and piles of broken furniture or machinery seen through rusted and twisted metal widow frames and gates. Scraps of clothing left by other visitors, or dragged in by nesting animals, fractured routes and inaccessible stairways: the derelict site provides a schizophrenic subject for the photographer.
One of my classmates, Zuleika, is making a magazine which includes several photo essays from around the world on the theme of abandoned spaces. I submitted a piece of writing on the subject.
Creeptacular – Part 2
Sunday, June 13th, 2010The ceramic process continues on this project with a few wrong turns. After a few comments from people I go convinced that I should build feeding tubes to go to the bottom of the pattern so I spent ages putting these on, then removed them later after some more expert advice.
Bits and Pieces
Sunday, June 13th, 2010There is only a few weeks left on the course, so I have been working on some things that could end up being exhibited, and just generally making the most of the resources, particularly the letter press and sculpture rooms. Things have been a bit tricky as the college is now in a fairly chaotic mode, so everyone is rushing around trying to get lots done, including the technicians who have to help making plinths and putting up false walls and so on. I have also been doing some work for the other than my research project; Joana Monteiro and I went to Bristol for a day to meet the publisher for Moving Image Review and Art Journal. Cooling towers from the train window:
Joana Monteiro on Eye Blog
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010My classmate and colleague just wrote her first post for the Eye blog. It is an article and her mini documentary from Senegal. Here.
MA Fine Art Catalogue
Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010Completed the design of the MA Fine Art Catalogue using Bree by Typetogether. It’s quite a nice typeface to use due to the OpenType options, such as the choice of single or double story ‘a’ and both old style and proportional numerals, so it was good for the details and it looks good as display too. It will be printed in a couple of weeks.
